Ocean 9
Direction: Lefts & Rights
Level: Beginner.
Best wind: South
Best swell size: 3 - 10 ft. Since the waves lose a lot of size wrapping into the bay you actually need a bigger swell for Ocean 9 to be working.
Best swell direction: North, North-East
Best tide: Mid tide
Best for: People who want to surf beginner waves during the winter and hang out in the resort with a restaurant, swimming pool, lockers, rental boards & lessons. You can make it a day out!
Crowd factor: High. Ocean 9 has become very popular for beginner surf in the winter but it’s a big surfing area so you can find a place to spread out and have some space in the water.
Kind of wave: Small and usually a bit messy but if you’re a beginner looking to practice catching waves and standing up then it’ll be fine for you. Not recommended for intermediate – advanced surfers. The wave sits in front of a resort called Ocean 9, hence the name. They have a 100php entrance fee and for that you get a locker for your things, can use the swimming pool and showers, eat and drink at the restaurant, and hang out on the grounds. This makes for a great day out for beginners and non surfers so the whole crew can go and enjoy. We often go with the whole family and spend the afternoon there.
Surf season:
This spot works during Fall & Winter when we have big swells but there’s too much onshore wind everywhere else. As the big swells wrap into the bay they lose a lot of their size making it perfect for beginners. During the months of October – March you’ll always find people in Ocean 9.
However, in the summer there is simply not enough swell to produce waves in Ocean 9 so it will look like a lake when you go there. Cant’ be surfed between May and October but it’s fine cause there are plenty of other beginner spots working during that time.
How to get there: Find Ocean 9 located on Google Maps. The break sits in front of a resort with the same name. So you can either:
1. Find Ocean 9 Resort and pay a 100php entrance fee. With this you can use the swimming pool, get a locker for your things, eat at the restaurant, and hang out on the grounds. It makes a fun day out and gives non-surfers something to do while you surf!
2. Find the small road before or after Ocean 9 leading to the beach to surf directly and bypass the entrance fee at the resort if you just wanna surf and don’t need to use the facilities of the resort.
