Alma - Mediterranean & Seafood

Instagram: almasiargao

Alma has only just reopened after being closed since Typhoon Odette three years ago, proving that good things do come to those who wait!  I was recently fortunate enough to go for dinner here and it was such a great experience that we’ve already been back for a second visit.

Alma is tucked away in a hidden spot in the town of General Luna.  Sitting on the waterfront with views of the boats docked at the pier and sounds of waves lapping the shore setting the tone for a romantic evening.  The atmosphere has a simple modern classiness to it, not overly complicated but laidback with a clean & neat appearance.  Once seated and ordered we received some complimentary homemade bread, which doesn’t sound that fancy, but it’s the first time it’s happened at a restaurant in Siargao so I knew this place was going to be ‘extra’!  The menu focuses heavily on seafood with a definite Spanish & Mediterranean vibe.  The seafood paella is fantastic though next time I’d like to try the lobster paella cause it looks so good on the menu.  I’ve also tried the Hokkaido scallops in a lemon garlic sauce and they were divine!  Since I’m a meat & potato kinda guy I’ve tried a different pork dish on each of my visits, the BBQ Pork Belly & Crispy Pork Knuckle and they were both lovingly prepared.  We haven’t had time to explore everything on the menu but it all looks so good and I’m sure we’ll be working our way through all their dishes over our next few visits.  We also tried the leche flan,  which is quite a common dessert here in the Philippines but of course it’s done at Alma with all the pomp & circumstance you could expect from a fancy restaurant.  In fact, it was probably the best leche flan I’ve ever had and my wife agrees!

In addition to the food, Alma also has a really great selection of wine, hand crafted cocktails and mocktails to accompany your night.  You can instantly tell the same care & attention goes into their bar as it does their kitchen so don’t be afraid to have a couple drinks to enhance your meal & experience.  Reservations are a must for Alma on most nights!

Siago – Latin America & Filipino fusion.

My secret ‘go to’ when I wanna get fancy or have a nice steak.  Set in one of Siargao’s newest & nicest beachfront resorts the atmosphere is cool & classy with a light breeze blowing through the restaurant as you take in the views of the pool, beach, and ocean.  Start with one of their unique hand-crafted cocktails. I swear, this is one of the best place for cocktails in Siargao and no one knows about it!  Try the ‘Take me to Peru’ or the classic Pina colada to ignite your love for expertly crafted cocktails.

Besides the cocktails, which I simply can’t stop raving about, they also have one of the best steaks in Siargao.  Steak isn’t cheap on the island, but once in awhile as a treat it’s really worth it and nobody delivers like Siago!  All steaks come on a bed of mashed potatoes with onions and chives.  They have a good selection of sides that are ordered separately to complement your steak.  However, if you’re not feeling like steak, Siago has a great selection of other mains, appetizers, sides, and desserts.  You’ll find something for everyone at Siago but what every dish has in common is it’s attention to detail and uniqueness.  Guaranteed to impress a date, Siago is a great choice for any of those special occasions that make life worth living! So get your drink, order your food, and take a stroll along the beach while you wait for a delicious meal to be served, island style!

Amore - Italian / Pizza

Instagram: amoresiargao

This little restaurant on Tourism Road is actually quite easy to miss but I think the owners prefer it this way.  Small & intimate, the restaurant fills up every night with a healthy mix of tourists & local residents laughing & recounting the adventures of the day.  The atmosphere is definitely a bit fancy being in a red brick building with only a few tables, low lighting and portraits hanging on the walls.  There’s also the option to sit outside under the night sky if you’d rather enjoy the cool night breeze.

Amore’s most famous dish, besides pizza, is the Carbonara Risotto, which honestly hits hard!  Creamy & pungent, this perfectly cooked dish doesn’t overpower with richness as a lot of creamy dishes can do.  Their pizza is among the best on the island and they have other pasta and risotto dishes to choose from.  However, here’s another secret tip!  Their steak is really, really good too.  It comes with a nice salad and some chips and it’s my favorite dish on their menu.  The steak isn’t huge at only 200g but with the price of 1190php it’s a fair value, most steak meals here are 2000php and up.  My wife loved the beef carpaccio as a starter and we’ve heard their desserts are awesome too though we haven’t tried yet.

So if you’re looking for a romantic restaurant or need to impress someone yet all you really want is a good slice of pizza, then Amore’s got you covered!

Wild - Filipino Fusion

Instagram: wild.siargao

Wild’s gonna get a couple special mentions here!  First, they’re the longest restaurant in operation in this list.  They’ve survived the pandemic and a super typhoon and are still going strong so you can imagine it must be good!  Second, I’ve now recommended Wild in two of my blogs so you can tell it really stands out in my mind.

The owner describes the menu as ‘progressive Filipino food’ and yup, that sounds about right.  The dishes are certainly Filipino inspired but done with a modern flair and twist and really made into something that stands out in it’s uniqueness & usage of locally available ingredients.  Their menu is constantly changing & evolving but Chef Dre never compromises on elevating the Filipino dining experience.  If you want to have a romantic date yet also explore the flavors native to the island then Wild is the perfect place!

We usually start with tuna carpaccio, a great way to open the meal with some fresh, local fish from the market.   For our mains, we’ll order the Flank Steak and Porchetta Kare Kare.  The steak is actually really big at 350grams and cooked perfectly to order with caramelized onions on top and a bit of salad on the side.  The Porchetta Kare Kare is a large piece of crispy pork belly & vegetables with a local-style peanut sauce drizzled over top of everything.  It’s actually super good!  My daughter also loves the Wild adobo and whenever we have Daddy-Daughter Dates she always asks to go to Wild, we’ve been doing this for years!

Wild is really a favorite among local residents so it’s busy most nights and we definitely recommend making a reservation ahead of time.  Extra tip; on Wednesday they do a burger night where they have a good selection of burgers & chicken burgers done with their usual flair & extravagance served a la carte or in a meal with fries & a beer!
